How to Donate / VolunteerOak Lawn’s pantries run on neighborly generosity. If you’re in a position to help, here are practical ways to plug in:
1. Donate Food
Non-expired canned and dry goods are always welcome: peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, soups, stews, pasta, rice, shelf-stable milk, and kid-friendly snacks.
Pilgrim Faith Food Pantry accepts food donations at the church; some listings note drop-off during daytime hours on weekdays and Saturday mornings — it’s best to call the church office or check their website before you come.
St. Paul’s, Faith Lutheran, and Church of the Living God also accept food donations directly at their church offices; call ahead to find out which items are most needed this month.
Our Lady at St. Germaine parish regularly collects food for its pantry; donations can typically be dropped at the parish center or church vestibule during office or Mass times.
2. Give Financially
A few dollars go a long way when pantries can buy in bulk: Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ: Online giving options and contact information are available at pilgrimfaith.org — note “Food Pantry” in the memo line if that’s an option.
Our Lady at St. Germaine: The parish “Giving” page lets you support parish ministries; parish communications often encourage support of the Food Pantry and Social Outreach programs.
For St. Paul’s, Faith Lutheran, and Church of the Living God, the simplest route is still the classic: call the office, ask how to make a designated gift to the food pantry, and they’ll walk you through the process. WhyHunger+3aithoaklawn.webchicago.net 3. Volunteer Your Time
Most pantries need help with: Unloading donations and stocking shelves Packing food boxes or bags Assisting clients on distribution days Occasional translation help for non-English-speaking neighbors
If you’re interested: Start with a quick call or contact form on each church’s website, and ask for the food pantry coordinator or social outreach contact. Check age or training requirements — some roles may require short orientations or background checks.
4. Spread the Word
Even if you can’t donate or volunteer right now, you can still help by: Sharing this list with family, friends, and neighbors in Oak Lawn. Posting pantry info on neighborhood social media groups. Printing a copy for your building lobby, office break room, or church bulletin board. |
