Oak Lawn's Commitment to Communication Infrastructure Reflects Historical Innovations

Modern Upgrades Enhance Community Connectivity and Trust

In 1915, the first transcontinental telephone call revolutionized communication, demonstrating that voices could traverse vast distances instantly.

This milestone underscored the potential for real-time connection, making geographical barriers seem almost irrelevant.

Today, Oak Lawn embodies this legacy by continually enhancing its communication infrastructure to strengthen community ties.

Recognizing the importance of clear and immediate communication, the Village of Oak Lawn has embarked on significant upgrades to its public safety communication systems.

In 2025, the village approved a $2.7 million project to modernize the regional 9-1-1 center, aiming to improve interoperability among public safety responders.

This initiative includes upgrading the integrated radio console infrastructure and procuring advanced 9-1-1 phone system technology.

These enhancements are designed to ensure that emergency services can coordinate more effectively, thereby fostering trust and safety within the community.

Furthermore, Oak Lawn has invested in expanding its broadband network to meet the growing demand for reliable, high-speed internet.

With over 3.2 million fiber strand miles in Illinois, AT&T Fiber is now available to more than 830,000 customer locations in parts of over 210 communities, including Oak Lawn.

This expansion facilitates seamless communication for residents and businesses alike, supporting activities such as remote work, virtual learning, and telehealth services.

The commitment to infrastructure progress extends beyond digital communication.

The Oak Lawn Park District has announced a comprehensive infrastructure improvement project set to commence in 2025.

This project includes major renovations at the Oak Lawn Ice Arena, replacement of parking lots and roofs, and updates to the Community Pavilion and the Racquet, Fitness & Gymnastics Center.

These improvements aim to enhance the physical spaces where community members gather, further promoting connectivity and engagement.

By investing in both technological and physical infrastructure, Oak Lawn continues to prioritize real-time connection and trust through communication.

These efforts reflect the enduring lesson from 1915: communities thrive when people can reach one another without friction.

In Oak Lawn, where relationships matter, ongoing infrastructure progress ensures that connection remains the foundation of community strength.
